Indiana D-STAR System Footprints

File description by Al Burke, WB9SSE:

The map shows the predicted received signal power level from the D-STAR repeaters as a function of location. The color depicts the available signal power one would expect with a unity gain antenna in unobstructed line of site of the repeater's antenna. The signal power-color scale is along the bottom of the page. The map shows predicted signal power levels for the six D-STAR machines in Indiana, and obviously, their signal footprints overlap.

As a practical matter, if one is on the ground in the open with a handheld with a rubber ducky, you should be able to hear a D-STAR node if you’re out to the areas indicating a signal power level of about -80 to -90 dBm (green to orange areas). If you have a vehicle-mounted antenna, I would expect you could operate out to around -100 dBm (orange-ish-purple-ish areas) and if you have an antenna up in the air, say 30 feet or so, I would expect you'd be good to -110 to -120 dBm (purple-ish -white areas) depending upon the antenna's gain and the feed line loss.

If you assume a hand-held / mobile rig with an output of 5 watts, the path from hand-held / mobile back to the repeater would experience about a 5 dB degradation on the return path as far as the Fort Wayne repeater is concerned. I don't know what the degradation would be for the other repeaters shown on the map.
